Water Penetration Testing Using Static and Cyclic Pressure

This test is widely used for field verification of installed fenestration systems, ensuring they meet project specifications and certification standards. It’s often paired with AAMA 502 for post-installation quality assurance. AAMA 502 is the field testing standard for newly installed fenestration products—such as windows, doors, and skylights—and often relies on ASTM E1105 as the method for assessing water penetration resistance.

This test evaluates the resistance of façade systems to water penetration under static or Cyclic air pressure differentials, simulating wind-driven rain.

How the test is performed:

  • Newly installed windows, doors, and skylights are selected for field testing. Locations are typically nominated by the project architect, façade engineer, or certifier.
  • A sealed test chamber is temporarily affixed to the interior side of the fenestration product to allow controlled air pressure application.
  • While maintaining the specified air pressure, water is sprayed on the exterior surface at a calibrated rate (typically 3.4L/min/m²). The interior is monitored for signs of water ingress.
  • Any leakage is recorded, and results are compared against performance criteria. A formal report is issued detailing compliance, observations, and recommendations.
